In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s there were many homeopathic mental hospitals in this country. They got very good results with helping many people with severe mental problems. We have already talked about some mental illness on other of our specific problems pages- these include bipolar disease, depression, panic and other severe anxiety disorders, autism and pervasive developmental disorders and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
On this page we will discuss many of the remaining mental illnesses including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, borderline personality disorder, and other severe and persistent mental illnesses that affect the brain.
The biggest problem in homeopathy helping people with severe mental problems is that most mental patients are on drugs which they need to stay on, but they cover up the symptoms so that we can’t see what is really going on inside. Also the drugs can interfere with homeopathic treatment, in many cases.
Ideally we would have homeopathic hospitals today where these patients could be weaned off the drugs, and then a skilled homeopath would see the symptoms, choose the correct homeopathic remedy and have them in a environment where they would be cared for and protected during the process of cure. The problem is that we have no such homeopathic hospitals today, and even of we did, insurance companies wouldn’t pay for this treatment.
As a result, we like most homeopaths rarely get to treat people with severe mental problems. But in the rare circumstances where we do, we sometimes can get very good results.
Here is one example:
Beverly was a woman in her late 30’s who had been diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenic. She looked wild and didn’t smell clean. She complained of deep depression and inability to sleep. She felt that everyone looked at her funny- that they felt she looked strange. Some days she feels very tense, strange. She thought about sex all the time- wanting to have- and feeling discomfort in her genitals. She hardly slept but when she does she had intense sexual dreams which turned into nightmares..
She feels people are always looking at her and feeling bad things about her. She talked non stop for 2 hours- rambling on and on.
We talked to her for hours to find out about his history to understand what she was like as child and what happened in her life to bring her to her current state. She was not taking any drugs.
Based upon these and other symptoms has we gave her a dose of Apis (note this was the right remedy for her but the possibility of it being the right remedy for another person who is schizophrenic is very low).
By one month she felt emotionally very stable. She had more good days then bad days. But some days were very bad.
By the second month she felt much better. She said that a lot of her symptoms had disappeared. She no longer thought about sex as much. She had no nightmares. She felt much less suspicious and felt better about herself.
Over the next year things continued to improve. The sexual thoughts and discomfort in the genitals nearly disappeared. She no longer felt depressed and felt much better about herself. She no longer was very suspicious. She started being able to work again- her focus was much better. Her sleep was much better.
In this example you see the difference between homeopathy and other approaches for treatment of mental problems. After the right remedy we expect to see everything getting better in the person’s life.
